Peacock Pearl and Black Spinel Station Necklace, 30 Inch Wrap

Spinel spent centuries being mistaken for ruby. Several of the most famous rubies in the crown jewels of Europe turned out, under a modern lens, to have been spinel the whole time. The black ones never had that trouble. Nobody mistakes them for anything but themselves.

There are hundreds of them here, 2mm and faceted, throwing glints of sparkle all along the strand. Between them sit cultured freshwater pearls with peacock tones in them: green in one light, aubergine in another, a soft warm gray when the light goes flat. They are set in stations with space between, so the necklace has rhythm instead of weight. It moves when you move.

Three ways to wear it

• Long ~one loop falling past the sternum, over a sweater or an open collar
• Doubled ~two loops at collarbone length, which reads as a completely different necklace
• Wrapped ~around the wrist a few times as a bracelet
