The Inuit of the Labrador coast tell it this way. The northern lights were once trapped inside the rocks along the shore, and a warrior struck the stone with his spear to set them loose. Most of the light went up into the sky. What stayed behind is labradorite.
You can see it in this pendant when you turn it. Held one way it is a plain dark stone, gray green and quiet. Tip it toward the light and the blue comes up out of the middle of it like something switching on. At its center sits a bezel set blue topaz, pale and clear against all that shadow.
The strand is genuine blue sapphire, a hundred faceted rounds in the deep near black blue of water at real depth. Sapphire is corundum, the same mineral as ruby; only a trace of iron or chromium decides which one you get. It is also one of the hardest stones you can wear, which is a practical thing worth knowing about a necklace you will reach for often.
