Ruby: The Fiery Heart of July

Known as the “King of Gems,” ruby has captivated hearts for centuries with its passionate red hue and regal legacy. As July’s birthstone, this precious gemstone is a symbol of strength, love, and vitality. Historically, rubies were worn by warriors for protection in battle and were believed to bring good fortune to those who possessed them. In ancient India, rubies were revered in Sanskrit texts as ratnaraj, meaning “king of precious stones.” Coveted by royalty from Burma to Europe, the ruby’s fiery brilliance made it a talisman of power and prestige.

Beyond its historical allure, ruby continues to fascinate modern gem lovers with its unique geological makeup. Composed of the mineral corundum — the same as sapphire — ruby owes its vivid red color to trace amounts of chromium. The finest rubies display a velvety, purplish-red hue often referred to as “pigeon’s blood.” While natural, untreated rubies are rare and valuable, many on the market are gently heat-treated to enhance color and clarity — a standard practice in the gem trade.

Metaphysically, ruby is considered a stone of passion, courage, and life force. It stimulates the heart chakra, encouraging love, confidence, and boldness in all pursuits. In crystal healing, ruby is said to promote emotional resilience, increase motivation, and help the wearer tap into their inner strength. Whether worn as a birthstone, a romantic gift, or a personal power piece, ruby reminds us to live vibrantly and love fiercely — a perfect gemstone for the heart of summer.  Happy Birthday all you July babies! 💕

Namaste, ~Lisa
