Peridot: The Gem of Summer Light

August's birthstone has a secret. It is born of fire.

Most gemstones form quietly in the crust of the earth, but Peridot begins its life deep in the mantle, cradled in molten rock, and rides volcanoes to the surface. How cool is that?!  Some pieces have even arrived on meteorites, falling to earth as stardust you can hold in your hand. Ancient Egyptians called it the gem of the sun, and it is said that Cleopatra's famous emeralds may have actually been Peridot all along.

Look closely at a Peridot and you will see why it has been treasured for more than three thousand years. The color lives somewhere between spring leaves and golden hour, a luminous green that seems to carry its own light. Unlike many gems, Peridot keeps its glow after sunset, which earned it the lovely old name of evening emerald.

A stone of renewal and open hearts

Peridot is associated with the heart chakra and has long been considered a stone of renewal, warmth, and wellbeing. It is said to soften stress, invite abundance, and help release old patterns that no longer serve you, the way a garden releases summer into harvest. Worn close to the skin, it becomes a small, steady reminder to choose lightness.

For August birthdays, that symbolism feels just right. This is the month of ripening, of long golden evenings and the first whispers of change. Peridot honors both the brightness and the letting go.
